Since 2003, YAPC has partnered with Westfield State College to create a haven for pianists of all ages—from the tiniest beginners with their first recital piece, to accomplished adults whose artistry is decades in the making.

Here, the air hums with possibility. Every spring, our halls fill with music: delicate whispers of Chopin, fiery bursts of Liszt, and the steady heartbeat of Bach’s counterpoint. Students arrive carrying not only their sheet music, but their hopes, their hours of practice, and the quiet courage it takes to sit beneath the stage lights.

Our mission is to nurture that courage—to offer serious piano students a place where discipline meets joy, where competition is balanced by camaraderie, and where every participant leaves not only with sharper skills, but with a deeper love for the music that has shaped generations. We dream that long after the last applause fades, the spirit of this competition will still echo in their hearts.

The story of YAPC began with Galina Gertzenson and Ruth Farnsworth, two visionaries whose love for music was matched only by their belief in young musicians. Their idea—simple, daring, and beautiful—was to create a competition of the highest standard, wrapped in kindness and mutual respect. The dream caught fire. Within two years, Ellen Buoniconti, a piano teacher whose passion for her students is as steady as a metronome, and her husband Bill, a steadfast supporter, joined the founders. Together, they poured countless hours into building a competition that would honor both excellence and the human spirit.

And as every great melody deserves a continuation, their legacy grew. Dr. Brianna Williford-Buoniconti, Ellen and Bill’s granddaughter, stepped into the heart of YAPC with the same devotion that had guided her grandparents. Bringing fresh vision, boundless energy, and a deep respect for tradition, Brianna has embraced the work as both a family calling and a personal mission. She is proof that music not only connects generations—it carries their dreams forward, note by note, into the future.

Over time, YAPC has flourished, adding new divisions so every pianist may find their perfect stage: Age Achievement, Length of Study, Duet, and Adult categories. For those not yet ready to face the intensity of competition, our Non-Competitive Evaluation offers something rare—a space to be heard, guided, and encouraged by master teachers who see the music within you, even if you do not yet hear it yourself.

We are deeply indebted to the Westfield State College Music Department, whose generosity and dedication infuse the competition with both prestige and warmth. Their halls are not merely performance spaces; they are gardens where artistry blooms.

Today, YAPC stands among the finest piano competitions in New England—not just because of trophies or titles, but because of the spirit that fills our stages. Here, music is more than a performance. It is a conversation across time, a celebration of human expression, and an act of courage.

We ask everyone—students, parents, teachers, judges—to move through this experience with gentleness, grace, and respect. Because in the end, this is not only a competition. It is a gathering of souls who love music, who believe in beauty, and who know that even the softest note, played with sincerity, can resonate forever.

              View Competition Details

["post-35","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
